Plotting for Position

Four NEPGA Professionals looking to advance to the Senior PGA Championship in May

At the New England PGA Senior Championship at Woodstock Country Club in Vermont back in July of 2013, Ed Kirby, PGA of Alpine Country Club took home the Tom Mahan Sr. Trophy with a staggering -8 (132) through two days. Kirby’s 8 stroke victory included a Woodstock Country Club course record round of -7 (63) in the opening round.  But sometimes, a tournament is more than just who wins. The New England PGA was fortunate enough to send 6 Senior NEPGA Professionals to the National Senior PNC at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL.

The 25th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship is currently in play at PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker & Ryder courses in Port St. Lucie, Florida. New England PGA Professionals Ed Kirby, PGA of Alpine Country Club, NEPGA Hall of Famer Kirk Hanefeld, PGA, Chip Johnson, PGA of Hatherly Country Club, Bill Andrews, PGA of Portsmouth Country Club, Mike Baker, PGA of Walpole Country Club and John Paesani, PGA of The Bay Club traveled to the sunshine state to represent New England in the Championship.

After two rounds, 4 of the 6 New England PGA Professionals have survived the cut, currently lead by Ed Kirby who is in a tie for 4th place at -4 (212) thru 3 rounds. The remaining NEPGA Professionals are also in pursuit of the leaders and looking to earn one of 35 berths in the 75th Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, May 22-25, at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich.

The New England PGA Professionals can be followed live on the front page of www.nepga.com and full results and leaderboard can be seen by clicking here.

NEPGA Announces the 2014 Award Winners and Hall of Fame Inductee

Boylston, MA -- With 200 PGA Professionals in attendance, the 2014 NEPGA Award Winners and Hall of Fame Inductee were announced at the Section Spring Meeting at Andover Country Club on Tuesday, April 15, 2014.

Greg Yeomans, PGA Head Professional at The Bay Club at Mattapoisett has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2014 Golf Professional of the Year. Yeomans continues to be extremely active in his Chapter as well as the New England Section. He tirelessly served as the Cape Cod Chapter’s Tournament Chairman as well as their President. During his tenure the Chapter experienced increased participation and renewed growth. Yeomans is an accomplished player, winning many events at the Chapter and Section level and has been a multiple year recipient of the Wessner Award. (Cape Chapter Player of the Year) Yeomans has been a member of the Section Tournament Committee for seven years and has chaired the committee for the last three. The Tournament Committee Chairman is a sitting member of the Section Board of Directors, and Yeomans has been welcomed addition in the Board Room. Greg has also been on the NEPGA Junior Golf Committee for four years and two years on the NEPGA Communications Committee.

Upon hearing the news, Yeomans commented: “Clearly I was honored and humbled when I received the phone call from President Kelley. Yeomans was actually traveling on a Member Golf Trip in Puerto Rico when he received the first missed call from President Kelley. “I was unfortunately unable to return his call until my return, and to be honest, a call from the President usually meant there was a Section tournament issue.” “I was bracing myself for the next tournament issue when President Kelley started the conversation by saying: “on behalf of the 1000 PGA members and apprentices of the New England Section, I would like to congratulate you on being named the 2014 Golf Professional of the Year!” After a brief moment to absorb what he said it was without question the best news/award I had ever received in my professional career, said Yeomans. “I will cherish this award and am honored to represent the NEPGA as its Professional of the Year.”

Bob Beach, PGA Head Professional at Braintree Municipal Golf Course and the 2013 PGA of America National Patriot Golf Award Winner has been elected to the NEPGA Hall of Fame. Beach has also won the following NEPGA Awards: 2008 Professional of the Year Award; 2005 Teacher of the Year Award; 1996 Junior Golf Leader Award (now known as the Youth Player Development Award); 2009, 2011, and 2012 Horton Smith Award; 2007 President’s Plaque Award (now known as the Player Development Award); and 2012 and 2013 NEPGA Patriot Golf Award. Beach has also received national recognition for his work with disabled veterans, Special Olympics and people with different abilities.

"My initial reaction to getting the news was it was an April fool’s joke, since it was April 1st," said Beach. "The award is a testament to our veterans and the people with different abilities I have had the privilege of helping through the years. They are the true heroes. It is an honor to be able to help this great group of people. I will continue to volunteer as much as I can and help as many people as I can."
