MATTAPOISETT, Mass. – The Duxbury Yacht Club team of Randy Grills, PGA and Timothy Corrigan, PGA posted a best ball score of 63 (-8) to claim the 2023 NEPGA Acushnet Golf Pro-Assistant Championship title on Monday at The Bay Club in Mattapoisett, Mass.
The Duxbury YC team of Grills and Corrigan carded eight birdies and scored an even par on the remaining 10 holes. The team posted an impressive five birdies on the front nine, to make the turn at 5-under. Birdies on the par-5 11th and 15th holes as well as the par-4 17th hole gave them the final 8-under, 63, for the victory.
“We didn’t birdie any of the same holes which is always great in better ball,” said Grills. “Tim played very well and made a lot of good putts…any time either one of us was in trouble, the other one picked it up with either a par putt or a birdie putt.”
“The course was in wonderful condition as it always is, and the greens were perfect,” Grills continued. “The Pro-Assistant Championship is one of our favorite events of the year… It’s always fun to come here with the guys from Titleist and the crew from the New England PGA”.
The Wollaston Golf Club team of Jeff Martin, PGA and Liam Friedman, PGA posted six birdies on the day to finish at 5-under, 66, for solo second place. They carded four birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 4-under before posting two birdies and one bogey to finish at 5-under overall.
The Bay Club team of Greg Yeomans, PGA and Ben Egan, PGA, who shared the 2022 NEPGA Acushnet Golf Pro-Assistant Championship title, claimed solo third place after carding a 4-under, 67 with 4 birdies.
Six teams finished at -3 to claim a share of fourth place: Bay Club: Yeomans/Joseph Delorey, North Kingstown GC: John Rainone/Brian Owens, The Country Club: Brendan Walsh/John Stoklosa, Wanumetonomy GC: William Maguire, Nick Jagoe, Shelter Harbor GC: Dave Tiedemann/Zach McKinley, and Walpole CC: Jake Leech/Nate Durant.
A total of 143 players competed in the Acushnet Golf Pro-Assistant Championship on a sunny Spring day at The Bay Club.
