WESTPORT, MA — The Rhode Island Chapter of the New England PGA visited the scenic Acoaxet Club on May 19th for a Pro-Am that saw a dominant performance from the Brown University professional staff and a wire-to-wire victory in the team competition.
In the individual professional division, Pete Weatherby of Brown University carded an even-par 70 to take the top spot. Weatherby utilized a blistering front-nine 33 to build an early lead, allowing him to stay comfortably ahead of the field despite a more challenging back nine. His colleague at Brown University, Jason Calhoun, secured solo second place with a 3-over par 73, while Tyler Piekarski of the Button Hole Teaching Center finished third with a 78.
While Weatherby took home the individual honors, it was Tyler Piekarski who led the way in the team competition. Piekarski and his squad of Stalone Williams, Elizabeth Kue, and Kamryn Kue turned in a masterful performance in the Two Best Ball of Four (Gross + Net) format. The team fired a 10-under par 130, highlighted by a 66 on the opening nine followed by a clinical 64 to close out the day. Their efforts earned them a convincing seven-stroke victory over the field.
The race for the runner-up positions resulted in a tie at 3-under par 137 between the teams led by Brown University professionals Jason Calhoun and Pete Weatherby. Calhoun’s team, featuring Bill Primiano, Jeff Quattrucci, and Dan Noons, utilized a strong 66 on the back nine to climb the leaderboard. Weatherby’s team, consisting of Bob, Dave, and Joe Audette, relied on a steady 67 in the first half of the round to secure their share of second place.
The Rhode Island Chapter extends a sincere thank you to Host Professional Brent Amaral and the entire staff at Acoaxet Club for their hospitality and for providing a course in fantastic condition for the tournament.
