MATTAPOISETT, Mass. — Emma Abramson (Sandwich, Mass.) and John Hiller (Mattapoisett, Mass.) each claimed New England PGA Avidia Junior Cup titles at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett on Tuesday. Hiller came from behind after entering the final round in a tie for seventh-place, while Abramson held on the lead she built in Round 1 to seal her victory.

After firing 76 at the Country Club of New Bedford in Round 1 on Monday to build a 3-stroke lead, Abramson fended off the charging Piper Jordan (Hingham, Mass.) and Lillian Guleserian (Westwood, Mass.) for a one-shot win in the Girls Division. Abramson posted a final-round 82 to finish 17-over par for the 36-hole tournament. Jordan and Guleserian tied for second at 18-over par, matching each other with rounds of 76 (+5) for the best round of the day out of the Girls Division.

Hiller established some back-9 momentum with a one-under par 33 to close the first round yesterday, and carried that steam into Tuesday’s final round with five birdies and just two bogeys to shoot 3-under par 68. Hiller’s round was  the best of the day in the Boys Division,  propelling him to the top of the leaderboard at  1-over par, one-stroke better than Ethan Whitney (Westminster, Mass.) who finished alone in second.

After an opening birdie, Whitney lost the momentum over the remainder of the opening-9, shooting 5-over par 40 before bouncing back with two birdies and seven pars on the back-9 to post 3-over par 74 and finish 2-over for the tournament.

Colby Sanville (Wellesley, Mass.) made a move up the leaderboard with a 2-under par 69 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for third with first-round leader James Robbins (North Andover, Mass.), who shot 76 at The Bay Club on Tuesday.
