RUMFORD, RI — The Rhode Island Chapter of the New England PGA paid a visit to one of the state’s historic courses, Agawam Hunt, on July 22nd for a Pro-Am that served as a warm-up for one of the summer’s biggest events. With Agawam Hunt set to host the New England PGA Senior Championship next week on July 27-28, many in the field were getting a valuable early look at the course before chasing a major championship.
In the individual professional division, Bob Tramonti of Triggs Memorial Golf Course set the benchmark for the day. Tramonti who was the first player out, put together two steady nines of 35 to post a 1-over par 70, grinding out a one-stroke victory over a crowded field of chasers.
Five players finished in a tie for second place at 3-over par 72, including Brendon Ray (Point Judith CC), Pete Weatherby (Brown University), Zach Mahan (Hatherly GC), Scott Hickey (Cyprian Keyes GC), and Tyler Piekarski (Button Hole Teaching Center).
The team competition featured a battle at the top in the Two Best Ball of Four (Gross + Net) format, ending in a tie at 6-under par 132. Host PGA Professional Lou Rivers made the most of his home turf, leading his Agawam Hunt squad of Greg Boyer, Mike Feeney, and Mike Watkinson to a piece of the top spot. The Rivers team turned in a solid front-nine 70 before catching fire on the back half with a 62. They shared the victory with Zach Mahan’s group from Hatherly Country Club—featuring John Healy, Richard Mullen, and Thomas Anderson—who put together consistent nines of 69 and 63 to post their 132.
A four-way tie for third place at 5-under par 133 saw teams led by Brendon Ray, Tom Ellis (Furnace Brook GC), Scott Hickey, and Agawam Hunt’s own John Simmons.
