BREWSTER, MA — The Cape Cod Chapter of the New England PGA made a highly anticipated return to Cape Cod National Golf Club on June 4th for the Pro-Scratch Championship. After a long hiatus from the Chapter schedule, the event brought out a premier field of competitors eager to test their skills in a gross Four-Ball format.

Players were greeted by a beautiful, clear day on the Cape, but the pristine weather came with a catch. Tough, howling winds swept across the layout all afternoon, turning a stellar championship track into a tough test of patience and shot-making

When the dust settled, the day belonged to the New Seabury connection. Frank Leja and Michael Trombley of the Club at New Seabury put together an almost perfect round, navigating the heavy gusts to fire a sensational 7-under par 65 and claim a narrow one-stroke victory.

The secret to Leja and Trombley’s success was a blistering 5-under par 30 on the front nine. The tandem tag-teamed the opening stretch making birdie on six of their first seven holes. A steady back-nine of 1-under 35 helped them in securing the victory.

The chasing pack certainly didn’t make it easy. A two-way tie for second place at 6-under par 66 featured host-club duo of Gregg Richbourg and his partner Ryan Brown, alongside the Bay Club at Mattapoisett team of Ben Egan and Sam Toomey. Richbourg and Brown mounted a furious back-nine charge, carding a 4-under par 32 coming home. Brown caught fire, stringing together a three-under par stretch on the final four holes.

Egan and Toomey relied on a remarkably steady front-nine 32, which fueled by a birdie-birdie start.  Their back-nine was a different story, with only a single par on their card. After two opening birdies, they made three consecutive bogeys on holes thirteen though fifteen. However, they quickly rebounded with three birdies on the final four holes to comfortably secure their share of second place.

The Club at New Seabury was well-represented yet again near the top of the standings, as Andrew Stolze and Brian Jadul turned in a strong 4-under par 68 to take solo fourth place. Rounding out the top five in a tie for fifth at 3-under par 69 were Arthur Griffin and Roger Hoit of Eastward Ho! Country Club, alongside the Hyannisport Club pair of Dave Einstein and Brendan Shields.

The Cape Cod Chapter extends its sincere appreciation to Cape Cod National’s Head Professional Zack Sweet, PGA, as well as President and General Manager Mike Walker, and the entire staff for their hospitality.
