MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sean Duong, PGA of Red Tail Golf Club claimed the top score in the 2022 New England PGA Stroke Play Series opener at Newport National Golf Club on Tuesday, April 19th. Playing in gusty winds and overall tough conditions, the group of 66 professionals competed over just 17 holes and Duong posted a score of 68 (+1) to take home the title.
Webhannet Golf Club Professional, Eric Higgins, PGA finished just behind Duong with a +2 69.
Liam Friedman, PGA of Wollaston Country Club and William Maguire, PGA of Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club, tied for third place overall with scores of 70 (+3).
Duong parred the first eight holes of the day and after starting the back nine with two bogies and a par, he birdied holes 13 and 14 and parred three of the final four holes to card a 68.
Higgins kicked off the day with a birdie on the first hole. He parred five of the next seven holes to head into the back nine with a score of 32. Higgins posted birdies on holes 11 and 14, added three bogies on the back and four pars for a total score of 69.
Friedman started strong as well, with a birdie on the very first hole of the day. With the eighth hole unplayable, he finished the front nine with a 36, adding two bogies and five pars. Friedman finished with seven consecutive pars to card a 70.
Maguire parred seven of the first eight holes and finished the back nine with five pars, three bogies and one birdie for a +3, 70 finish.
