DUXBURY, Mass. – The Assistants of the New England PGA battled for the coveted Hudson Cup on Thursday at Duxbury Yacht Club, and David Grygiel (Tee N’ Tee Golfland) shot the only under-par round of the day, posting a 1-under 71 to take home the hardware.
Grygiel got off to a quick start with a birdie at the first hole. He gave it back with a bogey on the second but went back-to-back-to-back on holes four, five, and six to get to three-under par through six.
“It was funny, my yardage reader was on meters so I started coming up short on my shots,” Grygiel said after his round. “I birdied one right off the bat and then birdied four, five and six, and then all of the sudden it’s like ‘whoa.’ It was good. It was fun.”
Grygiel then settled down with 10 pars and just two bogeys over his final 12 holes to win the Hudson Cup.
“I hit a lot of good shots and I hit some bad ones too,” Grygiel added. “The putter worked on the front nine. On the back it looked like I didn’t know how to putt. I chipped a couple up close, so it was a mish-mash of things and I held it together.”
Matt Alwin (Dedham Country and Polo) and Shawn Warren (Falmouth CC) each shot even-par 72 and to tie for second. Alwin made four birdies in his round, including birdies on the second and eighth holes to make the turn in one-under 35. He got it to two-under with a birdie on the 10th, but made three bogeys in his final seven holes to post 72. Warren birdied two of the four Par-5s, but gave them back with a double-bogey on the Par-5 fourth.
Six players, including John Geraci (Brookline GC), Seul-Ki Park (Winchester CC), Patrick Kowker (Portland CC), Nick Funk (Old Sandwich GC), Zac Temple (Hanover CC), and Robert Bruso (Blackstone National GC) tied for fourth at +1.
