COHASSET, Mass. – Salem Country Club’s Kirk Hanefeld carded five birdies to capture the NEPGA’s fourth Stroke Play Series event title with a four-under 66. The event took place on Monday, August 1st at Cohasset Golf Club.

Hanefeld shot two under on the front and back nine to finish with the four-under total for the victory. He clinched the one-stroke victory over Kevin Rhoads (The Country Club) and John Hickson (Northport Golf Club), who finished the event three-under, 67s for a share of second place.

Rhoads was even through the first nine holes. He carded a birdie on the 10th hole before a bogey on 12 followed by an eagle on 13 put him at two-under with five holes to go. He posted a bogey on 15 and birdies on 16 and 17 to finish the back nine three-under for solo second place, 67.

Hickson shot three-under with three birdies on the front nine. He posted three more birdies and three bogeys to finish the back nine even and three-under, 67, overall.

Cohasset’s Brian Kienke and Portland Country Club’s Dan Venezio shot 1-under 69’s to share the fourth place spot. Kienke started the day with birdies on 6, 7, and 8 to go three-under on the front nine. He finished the back nine two-over to finish in fourth place. Venezio shot a two-under 34 on the front nine while carding four birdies. He went one-over on the back to finish one-under overall in a share of fourth place.

Six professionals tied for sixth place overall, shooting even par, 70: Eric Barlow (Winchester CC), Brendon Ray (Point Judith CC), Greg Kelly (Myopia Hunt Club), Greg Farland (Marlborough CC), Sean Irons (Fall River CC), and Shawn Warren (Falmouth CC – Maine).

Barlow carded a birdie on the first hole, two bogeys, and an eagle on the seventh hole to finish the front nine one-under, 35. He shot one over on the back to finish with an even par-70 to claim a share of sixth place.

Ray shot even on both ends of the card and posted four birdies on the day.

Kelly shot an even 36 on the front nine with three birdies, a bogey on one, and a double bogie on four. He added a birdie on 10, bogeys on 12 and 15 and a birdie on 18 to clinch a share of fifth place with an even par-70.

Farland was one-under, 35, with two birdies and one bogey on the front nine. He birdied two and bogeyed three on the back to finish with a share of sixth place, carding and even par-70.

Irons shot even on both ends of the day and carded two birdies and two bogeys to finish even and tied for sixth place overall.

Warren birdied holes five and nine to finish the front two-under, 34. He went two-over on the back, including an eagle on 13, to finish with an even-70 overall.
