Carrabassett Valley, ME — John Hickson of Northport Golf Club further cemented his place in Maine golf history by winning the 2025 State of Maine Championship at Sugarloaf Golf Club with a two-day total of 3-under-par 141 (70-71). The victory marks Hickson’s sixth State of Maine title—more than any other player in the event’s history. He previously won in 2024, 2017, 2014, 2012, and 2007.
Hickson’s steady and composed play separated him from the field as he claimed a five-shot victory in one of the state’s most prestigious events, which annually draws the state’s top PGA Professionals and amateurs. Daulton Wickenden of Samoset Resort finished runner-up at 2-over 146 (73-73), while amateur Jackson King of Barton Golf Club delivered one of the standout performances of the week. King’s rounds of 76-76 earned him a third-place overall finish and low amateur honors with a total of 152 (+8).
King claimed the Amateur Division title, edging out Sugarloaf’s own Benjamin DeBiase, who finished just one stroke back at 153 (77-76). Mark Wallace of Northport Golf Club took third among amateurs at 156, while also winning the Senior Amateur Division. Wallace’s consistency helped him top the senior field, finishing ahead of Sean Clark of Kebo Valley (160) and Guy Lansing of Waterville Country Club (164).
In the Junior Amateur Division, SJ Welch posted a pair of 79s to win with a total of 158 (+14). Welch held off Austin Gould of Waterville and Drew Mertzel of Springbrook, who tied for second at 166. Ryan Savona finished fourth at 169, followed by Clay Casey at 173.

As always, Sugarloaf Golf Club provided a scenic and challenging setting, with dramatic elevation changes, firm greens, and mountain views creating a true championship atmosphere. The course once again proved to be a stern but fair test for Maine’s finest.
The New England PGA extends sincere thanks to Head Golf Professional Oscar Parks, PGA, and General Manager John DeBiase for their outstanding efforts in hosting this year’s championship.
