BOYLSTON, Mass. — A new century for the New England PGA Section Championship will also mark a new era for the NEPGA’s female professionals. In 2021, the 101st NEPGA Section Championship will include the first NEPGA Women’s Section Championship.
The 36-hole NEPGA Women’s Section Championship will take place over the first two rounds of the Section Championship, Aug. 30-31 at Worcester Country Club and Marlborough Country Club. Women will have the option to enter the Women’s Section Championship only, the NEPGA Section Championship only, or compete in both events simultaneously, with the outright Section Championship wrapping up Sept. 1 at Worcester CC.
“We are extremely excited to create this new event that will coincide with our Section’s Major Championship,” New England PGA Executive Director Mike Higgins said. “The New England PGA is committed to creating additional playing opportunities for our female PGA Professionals and I am looking forward to watching the growth of the Women’s NEPGA Championship over the next few years. We are creating history in 2021!”
The NEPGA Women’s Section Championship is an initiative of the newly formed NEPGA Women of the Game Committee, and is intended to attract more female participants to compete in tournaments throughout the Section. Traditionally, only 1-2 percent of the NEPGA Section Championship field is comprised of women, despite women representing roughly 10 percent of Section Professionals. The Women of the Game Committee aims to increase both of those numbers.
The NEPGA Women’s Section Championship will be open to all female Class A PGA Professionals in good standing within the New England Section. The championship is just one of several initiatives the Women of the Game Committee is rolling out in 2021 aimed at providing more opportunities for female professionals and amateurs alike.
