NANTUCKET, MA — A historic performance highlighted the 37th annual Island Classic at Miacomet Golf Club from September 30th to October 1st, led by an extraordinary second round from Greg Kelly.
In the individual professional division, Kelly (Bay Club at Mattapoisett) put together a standout second round to claim top honors while setting a new blue tee course record at Miacomet, firing a bogey-free 9-under par 63. For context, the championship black tee course record is a 65, set by Patrick Nealon during the 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. After opening with a 1-under par 71 in round one, Kelly’s record-setting second round brought his two-day total to 10-under par 134. First-round leader Arthur Griffin of Eastward Ho! Country Club, who opened with a 3-under 69, finished in second place, while Gregg Richbourg (Cape Cod National GC) and host PGA Professional Michael Haberl (Miacomet GC) rounded out the top individual professional performers.
Kelly’s second round gained momentum during a four-hole stretch on holes 4 through 7, where he went eagle-eagle-birdie-birdie. He kept a clean card the rest of the way, finishing his round with two eagles and five birdies to put his name in the Miacomet record books.
In the 2 Best Ball of 4 Combined team competition, Arthur Griffin and his Eastward Ho! Country Club squad of Jack Bohman, Mark Herman, and Bill Driscoll delivered a dominant performance to capture the team championship. The group opened with a blistering 127 (-17) and backed it up with a 131 (-13) to finish at 30-under par 258, winning the division by six strokes. Two teams tied for second place at 24-under par 264: host professional Mike Haberl’s Miacomet group (Ron Bowman, Robert Coleman, Kirk Coburn) and David Donnellan’s Hyannis Golf Club team (Will Donnellan, Patrick Sharpe, Jon Vidales). Kelly’s historic round propelled his Bay Club group to a fourth-place team finish at 23-under par 265.
The Cape Cod Chapter extends its sincere thanks to Host PGA Professional Mike Haberl, PGA, and the entire staff at Miacomet Golf Club for their hospitality and for presenting the course in exceptional condition for the 37th playing of the event.
