NORTH READING, Mass – On Monday, Thomson Country Club played host to the Massachusetts Chapter Individual Stableford. 19 Professionals descended on the beautiful Geoffrey Cornish design and braved the chilly fall weather with their Chapter peers.
Myopia Hunt Club’s Greg Kelly racked up 34 points in the stableford format, with 20 of them coming by way of his even par front nine. Despite only tallying 14 points on the inward half, Kelly secured his spot on the podium with a share of third place. Matching Kelly’s mark of 34 was Lou Rivers of Agawam Hunt Club, whose three birdies on the day accounted for more than a third of his total points.
Consistency proved to be the key to success on Monday, as those who played steady and successfully avoided big numbers fared well. Rob Neaton (North Andover CC) made two bogeys and a birdie on his opening nine, and followed it up with three bogeys and a birdie in the closing stretch. His 18-17 split for 35 points bested Kelly and Rivers by one and vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard. Neaton wasn’t alone at the top, as Rob Bradley of Brockton CC turned in a nearly identical scorecard, finishing with the same 18-17 point breakdown to mirror Neaton’s 35 points.
The highlight of the day was Peter Hulbert’s eagle at the first, which secured him six stableford points and a skin. Other skins that lived included Thomson CC’s own Kristen McDonald (Hole #6), Todd Scarafoni (Hole #7), Greg Kelly (Hole #8), and Rob Bradley (Hole #11).
A big thank you to Thomson CC and Chris Young, PGA and Kristen MacDonald, PGA for graciously hosting the Massachusetts Chapter! The Massachusetts Chapter wraps up its 2024 schedule on Monday, November 4th at the Blue Hill Country Club Pro-Pro.
