Sharon, Mass. – The New England PGA Section hosted Stroke Play Series #4 at the Cape Club of Sharon on Tuesday, August 18th. Jeff Martin, PGA (Wollaston GC) took home the victory, shooting a 5-under 67. The NEPGA welcomed over 80 PGA Professionals to compete in the 18-hole individual stroke play event. The day started with a light fog and moved into warm and humid temperatures in the later afternoon as the field battled through the classic New England-style championship, Geoffrey Cornish layout.

RESULTS

Martin posted an impressive opening nine holes, kicking off the round with birdies on holes 1 and 2, and adding another on the par-5 5th hole and one on the par-4 8th hole, to make the turn at 4-under. He carried the momentum into the back nine, adding birdies on holes 10 and 11 to move to 6-under. A bogey on 14 put him at his final 5-under, which proved to be enough for the 1-stroke victory over Rich Berberian, PGA (Vesper CC).

Berberian also started the day with a birdie on the first hole, and jumped to 3-under with an eagle on 5. A bogey on 9 put him at 2-under heading into the back nine. A bogey on 16 moved him to 1-under, but Berberian quickly bounced back with a birdie on 16 and another eagle on 17 to finish at 4-under overall.

Nico Ciolino, PGA (Brae Burn CC) and Shawn Warren, PGA (Bates College) rounded out the top three finishers in a tie for third place at 3-under, 69. Ciolino finished the day with 6 birdies on his scorecard while Warren posted four.

Scores stayed competitive throughout the day with Chris Houston, PGA (Laconia CC) finishing in solo fifth place at 2-under.
