HYANNISPORT, Mass- The Cape Cod Chapter held its annual Pro-Pro at the Hyannisport Club this Wednesday, with 26 teams of New England PGA Professionals playing for the title. The usually windy track played relatively calm as teams were able to record some low scores. The top spot saw a battle between pros from the same club with two teams tying for victory, both comprised of Professionals from The Club at New Seabury, finishing at 5-under par 66.
The champions were Jim Clay and Andrew Stolze (The Club at New Seabury) in addition to Frank Leja (The Club at New Seabury) and Ed Kirby (The Aquidneck Club). Leja and Kirby recorded one of the more impressive rounds in recent memory en route to victory. The duo played a solid front nine going recording two birdies and one bogey to out in 1-under 35. A bogey on the 12th hole dropped team back to even par and victory looked doubtful. However, Leja and Kirby did not give up and played fantastic golf on the final 4 holes, with a finishing stretch of birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie to get into the clubhouse at 5-under.
Kirby and Leja held the lead for most of the day but Clay and Stolze, who played in the second to last group, had an impressive finish of their own to record. Clay and Stolze similarly had a slow start playing the front nine at even par. Birdies on 12 and 13 as well as 15 and 16 got them to 4-under par and within 1-shot of Kirby and Leja. A par on the par-3 17th left them needing birdie on 18 to tie and Stolze came up clutch making a birdie 3 to tie for the victory.
PGA Members Michael Elliott and Chris Kasheta finished in 3rd place at 3-under 68 and five teams finished in a tie for 4th with scores of 2-under 69.
