NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Shawn Warren (Falmouth CC – Maine) sits in first place following the first round of the New England PGA National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship at The Country Club of New Bedford. He carded a two-under 68 to take the lead. The first round was played on a warm and windy September day in North Dartmouth, Mass.

Warren won the NEPGA National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship in 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2020.

Zane Brownrigg (Fall River CC) carded a three-over 73 to sit in solo second place while Rob Neaton (North Andover CC) trailed by one stroke with a four-over 74 through the first 18 holes.

Warren started the day strong, carding a birdie on the par-4 first hole. He went on to par holes 2 through 8 and finished the front nine with a birdie on the par-4 9th hole to make the turn at two-under. He traded a birdie and a bogey on holes 10 and 11 to finish even on the back and two-under, 68, overall.

Brownrigg carded three birdies and three bogeys on the front nine. He kicked off the round with a birdie on the first hole before bogeying the second hole. He birdied the par-4 third hole and carded back-to-back bogeys on holes 4 and 5. A birdie on the par-4 sixth hole gave him an even 36 heading into the back nine. Three bogeys on holes 11, 14 and 15 finished Brownrigg three-over overall to sit in second place at the end of round one.

Neaton carded three bogeys and two birdies through the opening nine holes of the day, making the turn at one-over. Bogeys on 11, 13 and 15 and a double-bogey on 12 moved him to six-over. Neaton finished the day strong with birdies on the par-4 16th and 18th holes to finish four-over, 74, to sit in solo third place.

Six professionals are tied for fourth place following round one, shooting five-over 75s: Evan Rhodes (Oyster Harbors Club), Sean Irons (Fall River CC), John Paesani (The Bay Club at Mattapoisett), Liam Friedman (Wollaston GC), Pete Scrimgeour (Vermont National CC), and Patrick Kowker (Portland CC)

Final round tee times begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. at The Country Club of New Bedford.

The top 6 non-exempt finishers in the NEPGA Assistants Championship will gain entry into the National Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. on November 15-20, 2022.
