Falmouth, ME – On Monday, Maine Chapter Professionals and their amateur counterparts assembled at the beautiful Portland Country Club for a day of friendly competition benefiting a great cause, with proceeds from the event being directed to the Maine Chapter Scholarship Fund. It was an impressive turnout, as 136 players were treated to a challenging but fair test around the classic Donald Ross layout.
There was no shortage of excitement coming down the stretch in the team competition, with some impressive scores posted in the 2 Best Ball of 4 format. Setting the tone for the day was the Riverside Municipal team led by PGA Professional Jim Fairbanks, who finished in a flurry of eagles and birdies to post a blemish-free 15-under total. As one of the earlier starting times, Team Riverside was forced to watch the leaderboard for the rest of the day as scores continued to pile in.
It wasn’t until the final group of the day that Fairbanks had to break a sweat, when Luke Claflin and his Woodlands Club crew sat down at the scorers table with two double eagles, four eagles and four birdies on their card. Despite their abundance of circles, two late bogeys and a double bogey left The Woodlands Club one shot back at 14-under and gave Team Riverside the victory.
In the Individual Professional competition, Shawn Warren of Old Marsh continued his stellar play and picked up his 5th Maine Chapter victory of the season. Starting his day with a birdie was a sign of good things to come, as he carded three more on the day and closed in 33 to fire a 2-under 68. Warren’s impressive performance left him three shots clear of Paul Champagne (Nonesuch River) and David Grygiel (Tee N’ Tee Golfland) who tied for second with matching 1-over 71’s.
Thank you to Dan Venezio, PGA, and the Portland Country Club community for being such welcoming hosts! Additionally, thank you to Five Star Golf Cars, our generous partner, for their continued support of the Maine Chapter!
