BOOTHBAY HARBOR, M.E. – John Welch of Nonesuch River Golf Club and Brandon Singer of Abenaqui Country Club tied to win the New England Assistants’ Association (NEAA) Stroke Play #5 event at the scenic Boothbay Harbor Country Club in Maine in some wet conditions.

The course played with some difficulty, including some rain over the first few holes until the clouds went away slowly. 17 New England Assistant Golf Professionals competed in the event. With only 17 players in the field, Boothbay Harbor showed its difficulty by allowing only 14 birdies past its gates.

Welch began his track for the title with a difficult start but regained the momentum on the par-3 seventh and the par-5 ninth with two birdies. Welch recorded six pars and one birdie on the back nine to sign for a 2-over 37 on the second nine. Welch led the field with three birdies on the day.

Interestingly, Singer and Welch played together in the same group. Singer dropped two strokes on the third and 4th holes but responded back on the par-5 6th with an eagle, bringing him back to even par. Singer remained even for the next two holes until he had a double bogey on his ninth hole, carding a 2-over 38 on the front. Singer then finished the back nine with a 4-over 39, concluding his round with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

Conner MacDonald of Cape Arundel Golf Club finished one back of the two leaders, shooting an even par 35 on the back 9.

A big thank you to everyone who participated, and a special thank you to Chad Penman, PGA for hosting the NEAA for this event.

Next up, the NEAA will be having its Fall Meeting at Wampatuck Country Club in Canton, Mass. with a 9:30 am meeting followed by a 12 pm stroke play event.
