MARBLEHEAD, Mass. – The Weston Golf Club team of Michael Esworthy, PGA and Griffen Wise and the Wedgewood Pines team of Pete Maki, PGA and Tim Johnston carded the low rounds of the day in the team gross division, with impressive eight-under, 62s to tie for the title at the 2023 NEPGA Pro-Superintendent Invitational on Monday, October 16 at Tedesco Country Club. The sun tried to come out all day, and a bout of rain came through in the late afternoon as the field battled through some cold fall temperatures.
Esworthy and Griffen started the day with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes. They added two more birdies on holes 2 and 4, both par-4s, to finish the opening nine holes at 4-under. They carded their lone bogey of the day on the par-4 5th hole. The final nine holes of the day were highlighted by three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 9th hole to finish 8-under overall for a share of first place.
Maki and Johnston started the round with a birdie on the 9th hole. They carded four birdies in a row on the par-4 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th holes. Three more birdies on the front nine gave them the final 8-under, 62, in a tie for first place overall.
The Ridge Club team of Matt Baran, PGA and Parish Pina along with the Northport GC team of John Hickson, PGA and Robb Herron tied for third place overall just one stroke behind the winners, at 7-under, 63.
Baran and Pina started the day with a birdie on the par-4 6th hole. They carded four more birdies to sit at 5-under through the opening nine holes. Birdies on the par-4 15th hole and 2nd hole gave the Ridge Club team the final 7-under for a share of third place.
Hickson and Herron started the round on the 11th hole. They carded seven total birdies on the day in the tie for third place at 7-under, 63.
