NANTUCKET, Mass.—The 32nd Annual Island Classic was met with two days of calm winds and sunshine on the usually windy Nantucket. 26 teams led by Cape Cod Professionals descended on Sankaty Head Golf Club and Miacomet Golf Course both of which were fresh off hosting the 2021 Mid-Amateur Championship.
Day 1 which was hosted at Sankaty Head saw two fantastic rounds posted. Sankaty Head’s Dieter Wiedmayer was first in the clubhouse having carded a 4-under 67 racking up six birdies. That score held for most of the day until Woods Hole’s Wyatt Frazier turned in a bogey free card of 6-under 65. Frazier’s 65 matched the low score of any player during the previous week’s Mid-Am. Frazier and Wiedmayer also finished atop day 1’s leader board in the team competition, with Woods Hole and Sankaty Head finishing at 23-under and 18-under respectively.
The second round at Miacomet saw more fantastic golf from both the Professionals and Amateurs. The low team of the day was Sandwich Hollows Golf Club who finished at 13-under, followed by the host Miacomet and the Bay Club team led by Greg Yeomans, who each shot 10-under on the day.
The low Professional on day 2 was Tom Tobey who fired a 2-under 7. Tobey bested Cape Cod National’s Gregg Richbourg by 1 shot.
Congratulations to the overall team champion Woods Hole Golf Club who shot 119-136-255 to take home the title. Frazier was joined on the team by his partners Ron Driscoll, Jim Durocher, and Peter Mierzwa. In a tie for second place were the teams from Sankaty Head and Kings Way Golf Club led by Dieter Wiedmayer and Bob Miller.
Frazier also took home the 36-Hole Professional title at 3-under 140, besting the Ridge Club’s Matt Baran by two strokes.
Thank you to both of our host facilities for continuing to be gracious hosts of the Island Classic!
