HUDSON, Mass.—The 2023 Massachusetts Chapter Championship came down to final group of the day as Chris Young of Thomson CC captured his first Chapter Championship with a score of even-par 71.
Prior to Young submitting the winning card, it appeared that the Championship would be decided via a three-way playoff. James Burke (Ponkapoag GC), Shawn Durocher (Cyprian Keyes GC), and Kirk Hanefeld (Salem CC) each recorded scores of 1-over 72 to share the clubhouse lead. All three players played great rounds to finish in a tie for second place.
However, that playoff was not meant to be thanks to a strong back nine from Young. Young’s round got started by making the turn in 2-over 37, recording three bogeys and one birdie. Young made back-to-back pars on the 10th and 11th holes and then followed up with his best stretch of the round on holes 12 through 14, some of the most difficult at Charter Oak.
His three consecutive birdies, the longest such streak of the day, propelled Young to 1-under for his round and in sole possession of the lead. A bogey on the par-4 16th hole dropped him back to even par and within one shot of joining Burke, Durocher, and Hanefeld in a winner take all playoff. Young took matters into his own hands making par on the 17th and 18th holes to secure the Championship.
The other highlight of the day belonged to Black Rock CC’s Jack Green. Green recorded his first career hole-in-one on the 150 yard 3rd hole!
